Fascinating Aïda's Adèle Anderson
Cabaret and Variety (music, musical theatre)
The legendary Ms Anderson brings you her seriously comical cabaret. Singing songs of disappointment, depression and death by songwriters who share Adèle's life view that things can only get worse and undoubtedly will. Adèle is best known as the tall one out of Fascinating Aïda. Accompanied by West End Musical Director Dean Austin in a show that may explore misery and despair, but is far from miserable or desperate. Laugh? I nearly died. 'A dangerous weapon' **** (Telegraph). 'Fantastic!' (ThisIsCabaret.com). 'Always hits the mark' ***** (Times).
Jim Campbell: Trampoline
Comedy (stand-up)
Engagement ring for sale! Jim Campbell had a breakdown so that you don't have to! The award-nominated stand-up returns to Edinburgh to help you learn from his mistakes in this gag-packed, confessional show. Overcome anxiety with a chronically anxious man! Find out how to be optimistic about love when it's the very thing that's driven you mad! Bring cash! 'Charmingly fresh... an hour in Campbell's company will leave you entertained and enlightened' **** (List). 'A superb example of how to craft a technically accomplished, winningly performed piece of comedy' **** (Fest).
Picasso's Women
Theatre (drama, visual art)
Picasso's Women, by Brian McAvera, is a unique look at the great painter’s early life through the voices of his wives, mistresses and muses. These three honest and humorous monologues were originally produced at the National Theatre and on BBC Radio 3. The unique stories of French model Fernande, Russian ballerina Olga and 17-year-old mistress Marie-Thérèse give an insight into life with Picasso and the influence the women had on his art. Set in a contemporary art space this modern setting points a spotlight on these women through the lens of 21st-century values.
The Journey
Theatre (comedy)
You've just been dumped, but you're stuck on a spaceship, alone with that person. A play about self-obsession and toxic relationships. A funny, relatable and surprising romantic comedy that rewards repeat viewings. Acclaimed stand-up Stuart Laws' theatrical debut, starring Will Brown (RSC) and Phoebe Sparrow (Inside No. 9) and co-directed by Phoebe Ladenburg. Praise for Stuart's work: 'Deliriously clever... Intricate, creative, well structured... an admirable skill with a tall tale that puts many of his contemporaries in the shade' (Skinny). 'Fantastically funny, leaving you wondering how he possibly comes up with these structural masterpieces' (EdFestMag.com).
Toby Thompson: For the Record
Spoken Word
Brilliant, beguiling wordsmithery, swathed in the timeless allure of classic tunes on vinyl. A warm and uplifting journey, gently spiraling through life’s absurdities, interweaving Toby Thompson’s singular poetic voice with some outrageously good songs. The perfect new setting for this uniquely musical and enigmatic poet. As the preview audience said: 'Something almost indescribably brilliantly lovely… absolute authenticity…' and 'touching and often achingly funny'. 'Toby Thompson is the future' (Kate Tempest).
Mat Ricardo vs the World
Cabaret and Variety (comedy, circus)
Award-winning cabaret star and the UK’s most successful juggler, Mat Ricardo, had a problem - after a 30-year career as the go-to guy for jaw-dropping dexterity, he'd run out of new tricks. So he did something stupid. He bet everyone in the world that he could learn any trick they could think of. This is a one-man variety show - world-class juggling, magic and illusion, escapology, sleight of hand, knife-throwing, stand-up comedy, feats of strength, demonstrations of dexterity and the only good trick that exists with a fidget spinner. 'Brilliant' ***** (Herald). 'Captivating' (Scotsman).
